Pittsfield sits in the Housatonic River valley at roughly 1,000 feet of elevation, surrounded by the Berkshire Hills on all sides. That geography means the city gets some of the coldest and snowiest winters in Massachusetts - around 80 inches of snow in a typical year and temperatures that drop well below zero in January and February. The heating season here runs from October through April, which is six months where every gap in your home is costing you money. Frost depth in a hard winter can reach three to four feet, which puts real stress on older foundations and any outdoor concrete.

The housing stock makes the climate challenge harder. A large share of Pittsfield homes were built before World War II, many during the city's industrial peak when General Electric was the dominant employer.
